Life as a digital nomad is truly an incredible experience. It’s easy to forget. But many people don’t have the opportunity to live a nomadic lifestyle — whether that’s because of job limitations, family obligations, health issues, or so on. Yet, living as a nomad offers the opportunity to see the world in a way that would otherwise be impossible living stationary in one city.

Still, nomadic life can quickly become exhausting, time-consuming, and lonely. Bouncing from one spot to another every few weeks to months is draining and makes it nearly impossible to build lasting relationships. Even if you embrace slow travel (which I recommend), you’re still moving quite often. It takes time to meet people, make friends, and build up a community. In fact, one study by a researcher at the University of Kansas said it takes adults 94 hours to turn acquaintances into casual friendships!

Additionally, one of the most time-consuming tasks as a nomad is the time spent researching and finding places that you want to explore in each destination. But, that‘s one of the biggest reasons to be a nomad — to explore!

Sites like Google and Tripadvisor feature many of the same “tourist-trap attractions”. Most nomads I’ve spoken to want to explore the unique places or local spots that a destination has to offer. Or, at the very least, a mix of touristy and local attractions. Finding these places is time-consuming and often involves hours of research. Even then, it’s easy to miss something you would have enjoyed.

This is where digital nomad communities can be beneficial — offering nomads a way to connect with others, meet new people, and get recommendations from other travelers who are in or have already been in the location they’re exploring.

There are several types of communities for digital nomads, which I’ll break down further in this guide, including online communities, meetups, Facebook groups, group travel websites, and more. Popular options include Nomads.com, Nomad Cruise, Digital Nomads Girls, and Remote Year. But there are plenty of others.

I’ll cover what each community is, why you should consider joining, some of the main benefits of each community, and other key details like pricing. But first, (if you’re not convinced already), let’s cover why you should even consider joining a community …

Table Of Contents

Why Should You Join A Community For Digital Nomads?

1. Connect with others and meet new friends

Most digital nomads travel alone. While there’s no problem with doing that, it quickly gets old. I’ve spoken with many digital nomads and one of the biggest pain points that I’ve heard is the challenge of meeting new people and building lasting relationships.

It’s very difficult to do as a nomad — you’re constantly traveling and building friendships takes time — two things that don’t go together.

I’ve been living as a digital nomad for nearly three years now. I consider myself a pretty independent person and I’m completely fine traveling and doing things on my own. Most nomads share this type of independence. But even I get lonely in my travels and I have a desire to meet new people.

One of the things I miss most about living stationary in a city is having a reliable friend group, which can take years to build up. Many nomads I’ve spoken to share this longing for building more lasting friendships and a desire to meet new people while they travel.

Having access to a tight-knit community can help ease this pain and make it easier to meet others. Communities can give you the opportunity to meet people before you get to your destination and/or further develop your connection with someone, even after you move on to the next place on your list.

Additionally, many communities facilitate meetups to meet other nomads, which leads me to my next point …

2. Attend exclusive events or find local happenings

Events can be a good way to connect with and meet other people. However, finding these events, especially ones catered specifically to digital nomads is tough. There aren’t a lot of resources for finding these types of events. Yet, a few of the communities on this list do have meetups specifically for nomads.

Additionally, outside of events to meet other nomads, local events can be a great way to experience the local lifestyle. Yet, it’s very easy to miss these types of events. Often, only locals know about them or they’re listed on niche, local websites which can be hard to find.

Communities can help solve these problems by allowing members to attend exclusive meetups and share local events that are happening in their area.

3. Discover unique attractions by tapping into experienced travelers

Exploring the world and finding the unique spots that each location has to offer is one of the biggest advantages of being a nomad. Yet, finding these unique, local spots is time-consuming. The current top travel resources (like Google or Tripadvisor) feature many of the same, most popular “tourist-trap” attractions.

Finding local spots or “off-the-beaten-path” experiences often equates to spending hours combing through travel blogs, guides, Instagram hashtags, TikTok videos, etc. Even then, the best places are often shared by locals or other people who have already been to that destination.

This is another key reason to join a digital nomad community — enabling you to tap into the experience of other travelers and seek out the best recommendations.

4. Access exclusive resources (e.g., guides, interviews, webinars, etc.)

Many of the communities here provide exclusive resources only available for members of the community — including guides, interviews, webinars, and more. This information can be incredibly helpful in improving your life as a nomad, from tips on taxes and financial planning to lists of the best places to check out.

Sure, there is a lot of great travel content out there for free. But often, these exclusive resources can help cut down on your research time and/or help improve your skills (e.g., in the case of exclusive workshops, webinars, retreats, etc.).
